What makes a good breaststroke swimmer? That was the challenge set to six hopeful champions of the future when they attended a breaststroke clinic run by double Olympic medallist swimmer and former World, European and Commonwealth Champion, Nick Gillingham M.B.E.
The swimmers participated in an interactive pool session led by Nick, who coached and demonstrated in the water his method and approach to breaststroke. The coach accompanying the group, Jez Noonan commented, ‘The swimmers really got some useful tips from Nick, as he was able to demonstrate new kicking techniques and drills which will enhance their performance. He pitched the session perfectly with enough technical information so that the young swimmers were able to understand without being overloaded with information and jargon.'
The pool session was followed by a workshop covering topics including nutrition, motivation, pressure, principles of goal setting, personal excellence, and most importantly of all enjoyment. All the swimmers, and parents, were able to question Nick as to his approach, ideas and opinions on the developments of the sport of swimming, and he shared the joys and downsides of competitions at all levels.
The swimmers all found it a tough and challenging day, but each one of them has come away with improved breaststroke techniques and most importantly a determination and motivation to achieve at their chosen sport.
